The south pacific in Costa Rica has one of the longest humpback whales season in the world, almost the entire year, which happens because there are two different migrations; the North Pacific whale migration and the South Pacific migration. The Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) averages 15 m long and 45 tons of weight. From December to April the Northern whales come and, from July to November, the Southern whales. In our tropical waters they hardly eat; instead spending most of their time in activities of courtship, mating, birth and breading. They have one calf every 2 or 3 years. They feed mostly on krill or marine micro-organisms which are abundant in cold waters. Sometimes you can also see the False Killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) and more rarely the Sei whale (Balaenoptera borealis), Brydes whale (Balaenoptera edeni) and Killer whale (Orcinus orca).
The most common dolphins around this area are the Pantropical Spotted Dolphin (Stenella attenuate), who normally move in groups of 70, 100 or more. They are fast and jump out of the water.
